Escort services and sex industry of Second Life will go down

Everett Linden just posted about the identity verification in Second Life and with this refresher, I just can’t help but think of things that will be mostly hurt by this upcoming feature.

Bye bye to free sex

It’s everywhere and can be seen in the popular places search of SL. Of course, when the IDV kicks in, lots of people won’t be able to access those orgy and free sex areas especially those who are just new to Second Life. However, they will be able to access it if they will verify that they are 18 and above.

Robin Linden mentioned that the verification will be available at the account page when the feature leaves beta testing.

Escorts will become more valuable

Let’s face it, if everybody will be required to verify their age before accessing an Adult Only area or a Rated-R, then escorts will have lesser customers, thus, their price may go higher. (Law of Supply and Demand – of course, it may not be as applicable in SL) Another thing is, the population of escorts might go low since one reason why they become escorts is because they need big cash quick and the verification will slow them down especially those who don’t want to verify their age.

Second Life is not for minors

This is the point, there’s a TEEN version of Second Life for minors since the main SL is for 18 and above. This is mentioned all over the place by linden labs on the SL site so it’s not hard to miss.

I’ve been trying to follow the ID Verification thing a bit, as it will certainly effect me. I can definitely verify, though over the Internet would not make me feel comfortable. That’s not the issue.

Also, according to how the article is “talking”, they’re basically saying that they’re forcing landowners to do something about it. Or they’ll get kicked/banned/whatever they’re thinking. It’s like a scare tactic and limiting choice that the owner has.

This isn’t about trust anymore. It’s about falling into the U.S. standpoint and following it’s “oh so right” rules. I don’t think they like to acknowledge much else than that. (And I’m refraining myself from putting anymore because I’m sure I could take up a lot of space with what I want to say).

Hahaha. ^_^ Thanks, Chino. I actually spent a lot of time writing things down in a blog post so that I didn’t mess up your comments section. Partially because I felt the need to and partially just for this subject’s sake. Feel free to reply to what I have here, since I’m still working on editing the blog post.

IMHO, it will not go down. It will just drive everything underground. Imagine escorts invading the non-r rated places

That’s something I was actually wondering about… and I wouldn’t really doubt that you’re wrong.

I posted my long, slightly rant-y thoughts on it in the first post here: http://morisl.blogspot.com/ – I actually had it finished quite a while ago since yesterday. You can comment here if you want to, just didn’t want to hog the comment space. ^^

Because they’re desperate? I don’t really understand either, but people can sure make a lot of money off of it. It’s funny that that’s probably one of the easiest ways to make quick money. What exactly does that say about people?

It’s not so different from Paid Phone Sex or Piad Chat Sex/Cyber Sex. The only difference I see is you have a visual representation of the action which can be further enhance by voice and video (webcam).

IMHO, it will not go down. It may scratch the surface a little but it’s far from going down!

If u ask me, I really pay for the real thing, that is if I was ever into it.

True, Cammy. Yet, it seems like people are willing to pay way more than they ever would in RL (in Lindens). That most likely connects with your other mentioning of how they’re able to see them vs. just hearing their voice.

It’s true. No matter what, the business can never truly be affected.

Its unfortunate, but there are a ton of underage people seeking SL, and obviously lying about their birthdate to do it. When striking up a conversation with a lot of these kids, they admit to being underage, so I am forced to report them which leads to there inevitable suspension.
They just don’t belong poking around in this adult game. There is way too much adult content to have an ounce of remorse for getting them banned. They should be sent an immediate message that they did wrong, as gentle as we want to be in handling the situation.

You can never prevent them from coming back to sl. Even using a credit card number is hardly a deterance to those more determined to join the games. You maybe have met the kids who are more meek. Those are just the tip in the iceburg as there are more who will not admit the truth that easily

Thats true..I still wonder how their going to moniter the users of second life. It will certainly be interesting to see which other places may reach most popular places! lol ^_^ I agree with you on supply and demand, and since the sex industry is so big in SL it will definitely affect the online economy in some way. I read about this elsewhere to..it will be interesting to see what happens in the end..
